The Decline of father’s role

Presently, the world is undergoing very big changes which can be defined as globalization. In this situation our country, Kazakhstan, is not exception. We also have experienced changes in society and the economy that are the result of trade, investment, and cultural exchange. Consequently, the impact of different social-economic factors of transition can be reflected in changing of everyday habits of families as well. The main shift in Kazakh family can be described by significant decline of importance of fathers caused by influence of western family traditions, gender equality issues and divorce.

Kazakh traditional family has always followed strict rules such as respecting the head of family “otagasi”: not starting the meal without presence of father; last decision was always after him; he was in charge of family and responsible for earning money. However, today, we can observe different picture of modern Kazakh family. First of all, in my opinion, progressive loss of the father’s authority is caused by influence of western family values. Diversities can be seen in hierarchical structure, social roles, regulations, duties, and moral values.

The main point of western family tradition is equality in family: so the concept of “head of family” and obeying father’s rules is violated because man and woman have equal rights. Moreover, duties are different: not only father responsible for providing family but mother as well. So, it leads to diminution of father’s power in the family and over the family. There is even opposite tendency where only mother works and earn money, while fathers look after children and keep the house. It can be sound shocking for some traditional Kazakh families but that is quite normal in European countries where fathers take maternity leave from job for looking after a newborn child.

Another problem which leads to decline of father’s role in family is divorce. If 10-15 years ago divorce was taboo for Kazakh society, nowadays it is absolutely regular process. After divorce…
