Carnival of Flowers.

This activity is for the students of the 6th form. They should be dressed in costumes. Aim: to learn information about some flowers.

I. The students are going in a round dance. Leader: It is so nice to have flowers at home. All of them are beautiful. Each flower has its own history or secret. Rose: I am the most beautiful flower. I am the queen of all the flowers. I was born in the East. All people loved me. Once the queen Cleopatra ordered to cover the floor with roses, and the thickness of the covering was fifty centimeters. In Ancient Greece roses were thrown to the road before the soldiers who had won a victory. Roman soldiers believed that roses gave courage and they put wreathes of roses on their heads. Very often there were roses on the ceilings in Roman houses; this meant that the talk at the table was a secret. I am a very useful flower. I am used for making perfume. Tulip: I am also beautiful and I also lived in Persia. But in 1634 I was brought to Holland. People paid much money for me, and if they had no money they gave their things, food, houses. Dahlia: I grew in Mexico and in the 18th century I was brought to Spain, and then to Europe. I got my name in honor of George a scientist of Prussia. I grew in kings’ palaces, there were parties in my honor. Then people forgot about me. And now I take part

Poppy: I am also ancient. Poppy seeds were found in dwellings of primitive men. But I am very much loved. In my head there are more than 30 thousand seeds, and I litter grain crops. Aster: Not all people love me, though I can be of various colors. In early times I looked like a daisy, but of a bigger size. The French called me “the Queen of daisies”. Some time later scientists invented a double flower and botanists shouted “Aster”, that means “a star”. Bluebell: How they are boasting and admiring themselves. But these flowers are not only beautiful. They are very unhappy. Eskimos in Greenland eat all the flowers that show themselves out the of snow, but not bluebells. In Japan people like salads of violets. In China they eat lilies with salt and pepper, boiled in milk. There is nothing to say about the rose which is popular in many countries. Rose: You simply envy. People don’t give you as a present even. But every flower – is the symbol of some idea or feeling. For example, a white rose means innocence, a bunk rose is youth. Lilly of the valley: I mean happiness. Violet: I am a symbol of modesty. Tulip: I am magnificence. Poppy: Dear friends! It’s almost 3 o’clock of the say-time.

II. The students read poems about flowers.

The flowers Party by G. Cooper. Lady spring gave a party; The party was very pleasant. The flowers by hundreds came. And everybody was gay. The Roses, Pinks and Daisies, When in the beautiful glade And flowers of every name. They sang and danced all day.

Colors by Christina Rosette. What is pink? A rose is pink Growing in the light. By the fountain’s brink, What is violet? Why, a violet, What is red? A poppy’s red, Just a violet. In the barley bed. What is green? The grass is green What is white? A lily is white With small flowers between.

Flowers by Ellen Troup. Red and yellow, pink and blue, See them dancing in the breeze The gayest flowers are just for you! Come, Mary, and smell them, please!

When Flowers come. First come the little snowdrops, And then the pretty primroses, Before the grass is green; And then the lilies fair; Then come the yellow crocuses, And oh! The red, red roses, Before a leaf is seen; They bloom so sweetly there!

The little Snowdrop by Kate Louise Brown. In the heart of a seed, “Wake!” said the voice Buried deep, so deep! Of the raindrops bright, A little snowdrop The little snowdrop heard, Lay fast asleep! And it rose to see “Wake!” said the sunshine, What the wonderful world “And creep to the light!” Outside might be.
