Greeting

Greet students; students respond to greeting and take their places.

Hello, boys and girls! How are you?

Unit presentation

• Books closed. Ask students what shops there are in theirneighbourhood and the kinds of things they or their parents buyfrom them. Ask them if they prefer to shop at local shops or inshoppingcentres and why.

• Ask students if they have ever been to a street market andwhat they like or don’t like about them. Ask Do you think streetmarkets are important/useful? Why?

• Ask students to open their books at page 16.

• Refer students to the photo and ask them to describe it.

• Give students a couple of minutes to answer the three questions.

Encourage students to speculate about the objects in the photo.

• Students can then compare answers in pairs before you checkanswers with the class.

• Tell students that the themes of Unit 2 are everyday life through

time, and things that we buy.

Background

Markets have existed for a very long time in human history. In

Europe, informal markets gradually developed into formal and

regulated ones during the Medieval period. Today, shopping atlocal market is a part of people’s everyday life all over the world. Suggested answers

Warm up

• Books closed. Write everyday objects on the board.

• Put students into pairs. Give students 90 seconds to write a listof objects that we use every day.

• Make this competitive by telling students the pair that comesupwith the most number of everyday objects wins.

• Alternatively, as a way of introducing the idea of describingobjects, put students into teams to describe a series of everydayobjects (do not choose any of the ones on page 17) and askstudents to put their hand up and say the…
