HISTORY OF ASTANA

The history of Astana began in the year 1830. Astana was founded in 1830 on the bank of the Ishim River by Colonel Phyodor Kuzmich Shubin as a fortress.

In 1939 was formed Akmola region and Akmola became the center of this region.

In 1954 in Akmola region the development of virgin and unused lands began. In honor of this event the town of Akmola was renamed in Tselinograd in 1961.

In 1994 Tselinograd was renamed in Akmola again.

In 1997 by Decree of President of Kazakhstan Akmola became the capital of our country.

In 1998 Akmola was renamed in Astana.

In 2019 Astana was renamed in Nur Sultan

The Palace of Peace and Reconciliation

The Palace of Peace and Reconciliation was built under the project of the world-famous architect Norman Foster, on special occasion to hold “Congress of leaders of world and traditional religions”. Its unique feature is not only in the purpose it was erected for, but also in the ‘Fibonacci Golden Section” concept used in this pyramid construction. Its basis is a 62x62m square, its height is 62 m, too.The Palace of the President of Kazakhstan - Ak Orda

One of the most interesting Astana attractions is the presidential residency “Ak-Orda”. Like the White House in Washington and the Buckingham Palace in London, the Presidential Palace has excursions organized for visitors. The Presidential Palace erected in 2003, some while later, on initiative of the Kazakhstan’s leader became an open state-level facility for everybody to see the place where decisions, the most important for the country’s life, are made.

Ak Orda is a large four-storey building

The 10 m-high ground floor houses the Grand Central Hall with total area of 1,800 sq.m., the Hall of Press Conferences, Gala Hall and Winter Garden.

The first floor includes offices of the Presidential Administration staff.

The second floor of the Ak Orda Palace is meant to hold events of international level. For instance, the Marble Hall is used to sign agreements with leaders of other states. The Oval Hall is designed for summit talks, while the Golden Hall hosts meetings in privy. Besides, it houses a hall in a form of a traditional Kazakh yurt (tent), a hall for extended negotiations and other premises for meetings.

The third floor accommodates the Cupola Hall for consultations with heads of states, Government Session Hall, Presidential Library and other rooms.

Atameken - a huge map of Kazakhstan

Map of Kazakhstan – Atameken Park was opened on 8 September 2001. The territory with total area of about 2 ha (2 football fields) houses reduced copies of architectural and natural attractions: Astana’s symbols – Bayterek, Pyramid, Palace of Peace and Reconciliation, country’s main industrial facilities, agricultural fields, mountain sceneries, well-known holiday resort Borovoe (Burabay), different roads, bridges and so on.
