British and american English

США - одна из немногих стран, где нет государственного языка. I have learnt different literature, such as books, newspapers, websites in the Internet, etc., to implement my purposes and tasks.To my mind American English is more widespread in the world in some spheres as advertising, tourism and film production. All computer technologies, business, entertaining industry come from America and work everywhere. American English is twice as popular as other kinds of English and four times as popular as British English. It can be explained by the fact that America remains the top superpower in the world. The language changes with the people whom it is spoken by, so that’s whytopics connected with the language will never lose importance. American English and British English have some differences, so that’s why some linguists think that American English is a different language. In 1793 NoakVebster published the first «American dictionary of the English language». In 1957 H.L.Menken published a book called « American language». In the 17th century a lot of immigrants from Europe came to America. Most of them left their land because of the political persecution, and they wanted to be free. Others came to America to spread their religion or to hiccup adventure. All these people built a new civilization on the northern part of the continent. Early English colonists in the new world spoke British English. But there were also a lot of other languages, that were spoken by immigrants, because they were from different countries. All these people found themselves in a difficult situation – they had to cultivate land, build houses, restore production and get used to the new natural and social-democratic conditions. The new nation needed something to unite people and to overcome national differences. English has become such a thing. At that time English was not uniform even within England: there were a lot of differences in the language of the aristocrats, peasants and the bourgeoisie. Even written language varies from writer to writer. Immigrants from Europe were mainly poor educated or even illiterate. So they needed simple language for their communication. Differences in vocabulary:

The differences in vocabulary can be only explained by the reference to American history. In some cases British and American people use different words, which have the same meanings. For example: - sidewalk/pavement - elevator/lift There are some words that are pure American: - highway, mail, movie, truck, gas and etc.

Differences in spelling:

In American English there is a growing tendency to use the simplified spelling. In many cases American spelling matches with pronunciation, which makes American English really simplified.

American people use -or in the end of the words, while British people use – our: – color/colour - labor/labour - honor/honour

In American English –er is used instead of –re: - center/centre - theater/theatre

In British English the words with the endings –se and –ce nave some peculiarities: verbs have the ending –se, while nouns have the ending –ce. – to license (a verb) -licence (a noun) In American English both verbs and nouns have the same ending –se: - license (a noun) - to practice (a verb)

In some cases in American English people write one letter instead of double ones: - programing/programming

In some words the ending –e is omitted: - abridgment/abridgement

In American English the letter combination –ct is replaced by –x: -connexion/connection

There are differences in spelling in the following words: - mold/mould - favorite/favourite - tire/tyre - gray/grey - stanch/staunch - plow/plough
