The hardships of the nomadic lifestyle, endless wars, oppression, rivalry, hunger, and poverty have shaped the Kazakh people into a resilient community, fostering the spirit to face danger with a "Nar Taukhel!" (brave risk-taking) attitude, while also teaching acceptance of fate. Since the place of success and failure in life is directly tied to the upbringing of future generations, the Kazakhs have always given special importance to shaping and raising children from a young age.
This is why many of the Kazakh traditions cover all stages from the birth of a child to their coming of age as an adult. Upon a child's birth, a celebration called "Shildekhana" is held, and a name is given. Sometimes, unusual names were chosen to protect the child from evil spirits. The Kazakhs, who placed great emphasis on lineage and genealogy, considered only descendants from a son as grandchildren, while children born to daughters were called "zhiyen" and were not considered as part of the grandfather’s lineage. Terms such as "nemere" (grandchildren), "shobere" (great-grandchildren), "shypshek" (great-great-grandchildren), "nemene" (descendants), and "tuajat" (distant descendants) reflect this genealogical system.
Placing a child in a cradle, holding a naming ceremony, circumcision celebrations, and riding a horse for the first time — all these are educational activities that prepare a child for adulthood. Marriage is the most important milestone in Kazakh life. The wedding ceremony is accompanied by singing, horse racing, playing the "altybakan" game, and chasing the girl in a playful manner. Especially, the tradition of "girl chasing" allowed the young men to demonstrate their courage and emotions.
Although many of these ancient traditions have been forgotten, their significance lies in revealing the spiritual culture of the nation. In the matchmaking and wedding games, humor, wit, and cleverness were highly valued. Thus, Kazakh people used games not only for amusement but also for education and upbringing.
National games also have significant value. "Kokpar" (a horse game), archery, Kazakh wrestling, and "audarispak" (a traditional game) were all designed to nurture agility and bravery in children. These games originated from everyday life, hunting, and military preparation.
From a young age, Kazakh children were taught to work, respect elders, and feel responsible to society. Knowing one’s ancestors and reciting their seven-generation genealogy was considered a duty for every Kazakh. This tradition stemmed both from the principle of exogamy (not marrying within the seven generations) and from kinship and educational values.
Although some researchers tried to present the Kazakh practice of raiding as legalized theft, it was often a means of seeking justice or taking revenge. The root cause of this phenomenon should be sought in intertribal inequality and social relationships.
The Kazakh people lived in harmony with nature. Without watches or compasses, they determined time by observing the movement of the sun, moon, and stars. They began sowing grain on March 21-22, in accordance with the spring equinox.
Nowruz is a reflection of Kazakh spirituality. On this day, people fill their vessels with milk, grains, and clean water and make wishes for the new year. Ecological education, such as welcoming the sunrise, opening a spring, and planting trees, is also practiced during this holiday. The "Bel Koterer" dish, made from ox meat, symbolizes strength and vitality.
National games during Nowruz, such as "Aitys" (poetry contest), wrestling, "Audaryspak," and "Altybakan" (a traditional swing game), strengthen the unity and joy of the nation. Particularly, "Tos qagysu" (chest beating) was a way to express wishes and emotions toward one another. This holiday often led to young people meeting and sometimes marrying.
Although this holiday nearly faded during the Soviet era, it began to revive in 1988. It was only later acknowledged that Nowruz was an ancient celebration that predates Islam and has folk origins.
The traditions, customs, and rituals of the Kazakh people, which have been passed down through the centuries, were not just for entertainment but were the primary means of educating the younger generation and uniting society. "Nar Taukhel" (braving the unknown) is not just a saying, but the life philosophy of an entire people.
There are many interesting facts related to the sacred places and customs of the Kazakh people. The story of how the city of Buzik was supplied with water demonstrates the people's diligence and harmony…
