Reading of the poem ‘I am not black. You are not white.’ By Prince Ea.

Students first read the poem aloud in turns.

They watch the video of a boy reading this poem to check the pronunciation and intonation.

Poem analysis.

Learners discuss the following questions in pairs. Remember to pair the students according to their level, thus, higher level students with the higher ones and lower level students with the lower ones.

These are the questions:

1. Which labels could society put on you according to the text?

2. Think about the metaphor of the car:

“See, when I drive my car, no one would ever confuse the car for me. Well, when I drive my body, why do you confuse me for my body? It’s my body. Get it? Not me.”

Should we judge people according to their appearance? Why/ why not according to the text?

3. Do you think the car metaphor is effective? In which ways are people like cars? In which ways are people not like cars? (Give evidence from the text)
