How KazNU Shaped My Academic Journey

Studying at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) has been a transformative experience for me. As a first-year student in the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, I began with a keen interest in science and engineering. However, my journey has evolved into an exploration of knowledge and personal growth.

The faculty provided a solid foundation in mechanics, mathematics, and modelling—disciplines that challenge students to think deeply and critically. What made my experience unique were the opportunities to engage in research and academic events that connected our studies to real-world issues.

One of the most meaningful experiences was participating in a conference that focused on Kazakhstan's relationships with other countries. Preparing for this event expanded my understanding of how technical knowledge intersects with international affairs and diplomacy. I had to research and analyze diplomatic trends and comprehend the broader geopolitical context of Kazakhstan’s ties with other nations. During this process, I consulted closely with my professor, whose guidance helped me structure my ideas clearly and present them with confidence.

Later, I participated in a student conference focused on artificial intelligence, where I chose to explore a topic that combined my background in mechanics with a critical global issue: water sustainability. I investigated how AI could enhance the efficiency of solar still desalination systems, which is particularly relevant to the Caspian region, where freshwater resources are increasingly scarce.

To support my research, I regularly consulted with my professor, who guided me in narrowing my focus and selecting appropriate modelling techniques. I also sought advice from a PhD student specializing in AI to better understand how machine learning could be practically implemented in environmental systems. These consultations were instrumental—they expanded my understanding, sharpened my research approach, and helped me bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.
