Teaching Elements of Statistics through Semi-Independent Projects in 7th Grade Algebra Classes

Abstract This article presents an instructional approach to teaching Elements of Statistics in a 7th- grade Algebra class through semi-independent project-based learning. The topic was selected due to its accessibility, relevance to real life, and suitability for self-guided exploration. Students conducted surveys, collected and analyzed data, and delivered presentations to the class. This method fostered student engagement, improved comprehension, and developed key competencies in data literacy and communication.

Introduction Statistics is a fundamental part of mathematics education, equipping students with the ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data—skills that are increasingly important in today's information-rich world. In the 7th-grade curriculum, the section Elements of Statistics is often considered light and approachable, making it an ideal candidate for more student-centered instructional strategies.

In this study, I implemented a semi-independent format for teaching this topic in a 7th- grade Algebra class. Instead of relying solely on direct instruction, I allowed students to explore the subject through small-scale research projects, which included surveys, data analysis, and presentations. The goal was not only to teach statistical concepts but also to develop students' abilities to think critically, collaborate, and present their findings clearly and confidently.

Connection to IB Preparation I work at a school that is currently a candidate for the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. As we strive to align our teaching practices with IB philosophy, integrating student-led inquiry and interdisciplinary skills into our lessons has become a key priority. The semi-independent project format used during the Elements of Statistics unit is consistent with the IB learner profile, which emphasizes attributes such as being inquirers, communicators, thinkers, and reflective individuals.

This approach helps students develop essential competencies that will support their success in the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and later in the Diploma Programme (DP). By engaging in self-directed research, analyzing data critically, and presenting findings to their peers, students practice many of the academic and personal skills that IB values— including critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and academic integrity.
