Annotation

The present work deals with the investigation of the phonetic peculiarities of the English language in Scotland. In introduction general description of the work is given, actuality of the problem is based, object, aim and tasks of the research are defined, main sources and methods of the scientific research are named. Theoretical chapter considers the history of languages in Scotland, dialect, accent and standard English, characteristic features of standard English, rise of the English and Scottish English languages, the peculiarities of Scottish English, brackets and phonemes of English language in Scotland, the phonology of Scottish English, segmental, sociolinguistic and prosodic features of Scottish English. Practical chapter considers phonetic peculiarities of the English language in Scotland, phonetic peculiarities of the consonants and phonetic peculiarities of the vowels.

Appendix consists of some visual materials proving the main positions of the course work. Conclusion gives the results of the study, defines the main value of it.

Definitions

Intonation - serves to form sentences and determines their communicative types. Pitch component of intonation or a melody - the changers in the pitch of the voice in connected speech. Sentence stress or accent - the greater prominence of one or more words among others words in the same sentence.

Dialect - subdivision of a language, which “varies from other dialects of the same language simultaneously on all three linguistic levels” Code - switching - a process of shifting between two different codes, where the code can be a language or a variety of a language.
