Theme: Methods and exercises to improve students’ English speaking skills.

Aim: To present the methods and the exercises which can be used to improve students’ English speaking skills.

The first exercise is called “Who am I? What am I? Where am I?”.

Who am I?

Teacher hands out flashcards with professions’ pictures to each student. They are given short amount of time to prepare. Each student describes the given profession, other students have to guess it.

For example: I investigate crimes and solve criminal cases. Who am I? (a detective)

This exercise can be used to describe great individuals and historical figures as well. Students can work in a group or individually.

What am I?

Higher graders describe landmarks, geographical and historical events while middle graders describe simple things like animals, food and drinks, geographical features, subjects, sports and so on.

Where am I?

Students describe public places, countries and cities.

The second game is called “ Breaking News”

A teacher prepares a sheet of paper with random pictures of objects (people) . This game is played in a team. Students decide themselves who is going to be a news anchor, a reporter, a witness or a police officer (they can add more characters depending on their fantasy).

Students have to come up with a story related to these pictures. After they have to perform their roles as a news anchor, a reporter, a witness or a police officer.

For example:

A news anchor: Breaking news. A robbery took place in the center of New York. Robbers were able to escape. Two police officers got injured in a process.

A news reporter: A group of people robbed The National Bank. They were armed and dangerous. They could steal expensive jewels as well. They escaped with a help of helicopter. The search continuous.

A witness: I was passing by as people in masks started shooting. I saw a police officer got shot in the leg.

The third exercise is called “Never have I ever”
