BIG CITIES OF SCOTLAND

Edinburgh is scotland's capital city and in 1999 becomes the home of scotland's new Parliament. It is the Old Town with a rich mosaic of narrow, winding streets. It was constructed in medieval times around the 12-th century castle.

Edinburgh has been the capital since the 15th century, when its fortified castle was the centre of scotland's resistance to its enemies. Edinburgh is the cultural centre of Scotland. There are some of europe's finest classical architectures. Contemporary Edinburgh is vibrant, sophisticated and cosmopolitan.

The city offers much to see and do: museums, galleries, theatres, cinemas, concert halls, sports facilities, pubs, parks and gardens around. August is the high point of Edinburgh's cultural year, when the spectacular International Arts Festival takes place, as well as the Fringe, Tattoo, Film, Book and Jazz festivals. The city is well served by air, rail, road and sea connections. The country is also known for its educational, artistic and folk traditions, and for the contributions made by its people to cultural and scientific development at home and abroad.

The University of Edinburgh was founded in 1583. It is not only one of the oldest but one of the largest and most cosmopolitan in Great Britain. It is highly respected for its teaching a wide range of schooleds — many of them inspired by scotland's rich and colourful cultural heritage.

Glasgow is the second biggest city in Scotland. It used to have many shipyards. Now the shipyards are closed and smart houses with sea views are been built in the docks area instead.

Most of scotland's population lives in or near Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, where most of the jobs are. Besides traditional industries in Scotland, such as coal, steel, shipbuilding, the Government has invested a lot of money in Scotland to develop it as an important European centre for computer production. Many large American and Japanese electronic companies have set up factories in Southern Scotland and there are now many smaller Scottish companies which specialise in computer equipment.
