The use of dictionaries as a means of increasing the learning autonomy of students

Annotation: this article reveals the problem of working with a dictionary and its effective application in the educational process.

It is known that among the most important elements that ensure and determine the effectiveness of teaching a foreign language (FL), one of the first places belongs to teaching aids. The number and nature of teaching aids used in the practice of teaching English testify to their diversity and even abundance. Teaching aids are designed to assist students in the perception, memorization of new material, during its training. While learning autonomy offers a choice not only of how to study, but also of what and when to learn in order to achieve the goal set for oneself.

Vocabulary plays an important role in mastering a foreign language. The totality of words in a language makes up the vocabulary. Vocabulary as the leading component of verbal communication appears in speech in interaction with grammar and phonetics. With the help of vocabulary, you can convey all the wealth of thoughts and feelings of a person. Vocabulary must be assimilated in the system, which is associated with the properties of the human brain to memorize logically organized material, analyze, synthesize and generalize. From all of the above it follows the need for a strong assimilation of the dictionary, which involves the implementation of vocabulary work.

Working with educational dictionaries in English lessons is aimed at enriching students' vocabulary. It provides a wealth of vocabulary in English as one of the signs of their general development. Therefore, it is very important to teach students how to use dictionaries to master the English language. Working with a dictionary develops in students the need for an independent and creative search for words necessary for speech activity, and significantly expands information about the lexical richness of the studied (English) language. And also this is the most individualized and independent type of educational activity of students, the purpose of this work is the systematic replenishment of the vocabulary of students. A dictionary is a collection of words (usually in alphabetical order) with explanations, interpretations, or translations of the meanings of words from one language to another.
