Science and Technology

Today, science and technology are closely related. Many modern technologies such as nuclear power and space flights depend on science and the application of scientific knowledge and principles. In turn, technology provides science with new and more accurate instruments for its investigation and research.

Of course, when we speak of technology today, we are looking at it in a much narrower sense. Today we often say that we live in an age of science and technology. According to one estimate, 90 % of all the scientists who ever lived, were alive and active in the 1970-s. This increased scientific activity has brought new ideas, processes, and inventions in ever-growing amount.

The scientific revolution that began in the 16th century was the first time that science and technology began to work together. However, it was not until the 19th century that technology truly was based on science and inventors began to build on the work of scientists. For example, Thomas Edison built on the early experiments of Faraday and Henry in his invention of the first practical system of electrical lighting. So too, Edison carried on his investigations until he found the carbon filament for the electric bulb in a research laboratory. This was the first true modern technological research.

They use visual and written prompts for a discussion, explaining and justifying own viewpoints. They have 1 minute to prepare and 2-3 minutes to talk on the topic. The questions based on the topics ‘Holidays and Travel’, ‘Space and Earth’.

Each pair talks for 2-3 minutes.

Lake Powell. Holiday Camp.

Start the day with a big American breakfast at the Lake Powell Diner at eight o’clock.

Come to the lake at nine. The weather is good. It’s warm and sunny. It’s a great day to go surfing or fishing on the lake. Our instructors are ready to help you. If the weather is not very good, you can go swimming in the swimming pool. Our instructors are there, too.

Are you hungry at one o’clock? The Diner has hot-dogs, pizzas, salads, ice-creams, fruit — all your favourite food for lunch, and as much as you can eat!

It’s video time after lunch. Or would you like to play computer games in the computer room? And our instructors can help you write your own programmes on one of the twenty ‘Apple’ computers there. Or do you want to read your book quietly in the garden? You can do that, too.

What else? You can ride a horse, or ride a bike, or roller-skate, or climb the mountains near the lake! Again, the instructors are ready. Let’s go! Or do you want to do some cooking in the ‘Cookhouse’? You can make your own cakes there!
