Explanatory note

Objectives of studying the facultative course "Cognitive Chemistry":

- the formation of a system of knowledge about the substances and their transformations, laws and theories explaining the dependence of the properties of substances on their composition and structure;

- developing skills to safely apply in real life knowledge about chemical processes, laws and their patterns.

Upon completion of the study of the elective course, students should know:

1) the composition, structure of atoms and molecules of substances, changes in properties during chemical reactions;

2) the law of conservation of the mass of substances and energy during chemical reactions;

3) on how the reaction rate varies with changing conditions of chemical processes;

4) on the possibility of conducting chemical conversions that are safe for the environment, while observing safety procedures;

5) scientific methods for planning experiments;

6) the main laws of chemistry in order to evaluate and apply them to explain understanding and predicting chemical processes, their patterns.

Contents of the program

Theme 1. Introduction to Chemistry - 8 hours. Chemistry is around us; safety rules in the chemistry and chemistry laboratory; familiarity with laboratory equipment; atoms and elements; valence; chemical formula; simple and complex substances; chemical reaction; types of chemical reactions.

Theme 2. Periodic table of chemical elements - 2 hours Structure of Periodic table; metals and non-metals, their properties.

Theme 3. Metals and non-metals - 6 hours Metals and non-metals in our life; Iron and its properties; Aluminum and its properties; Hydrogen and its properties; Oxygen and its properties.

Theme 4. Calculations in Chemistry - 10 hours Calculations in mole, volume and the number of atom; calculations in chemical reaction; solutions, calculations of solubility and mass percentage of substances, molar concentration; preparation of solutions; the relative density of gases, Law of combining volumes; Thermochemistry.

Theme 5. Chemistry and life - 4 hours Chemical elements in human body; chemical substances in every day and their safety; Ecological Chemistry.

Theme 6. Project work – 3 hours Project. Summarize the project work.

The final lesson. Conference lesson: ‘Cognitive Chemistry”.
