Warm up

• Books closed. Write the following on the board: the Eiffel Tower,the Statue of Liberty, the Coliseum.

• Ask students which cities these monuments represent.

Elicit: Paris, New York and Rome.

• Elicit examples of other buildings, monuments, objects orpeople that are in some way representative of particular citiesor countries. You may wish to introduce the adjective iconic atthis point.

Language note

The adjective iconic means relating to an icon. Icon originallyreferred to devotional paintings of holy figures which wereused in religious ceremonies, but is now mostly used to referto someone regarded as being representative or symbolic ofsomething and therefore worthy of admiration, e.g. MarilynMonroe is one of the icons of Hollywood. Iconic is now used with

the meaning well-known, popular or commercially successful, andhas become a cliché in the worlds of media and marketing.

The adjective retro refers to fashion or style that borrows a lookcommon at a point in the recent past.

Practice

1 • Ask students to open their books at page 23.

• Refer students to the photos and then ask the class the

questions.

• Elicit answers, but do not confirm or reject them at this

stage. Students will check their answers in Exercise 2.

2 • Ask students to read the magazine article to check theiranswers from Exercise 1.
