Students will begin to look closely at the periodic table. They will be introduced to the basic information given for the elements in most periodic tables: the name, symbol, atomic number, and atomic mass for each element. Students will focus on the first 20 elements.

They will try to correctly match cards with information about an element to each of the first 20 elements. Students will then watch several videos of some interesting chemical reactions involving some of these elements.

Dmitri Mendeleev is often considered the “father” of the periodic table, and the studies of many scientists have also contributed to form the modern periodic table. The discovery of individual elements was necessary to begin to the construction of the periodic table. Although the elements, gold (Au), silver (Ag), tin (Sn), copper (Cu), lead (Pb),mercury (Hg), antimony (Sb), arsenic (As), carbon (C), iron (Fe), sulfur (S) and zinc (Zn) had been known since ancient times, the first scientific discovery of an element occurred in 1669, when Hennig Brand discovered phosphorus (P). During the next two hundred years various chemical and physical properties ofelements and their compounds were studied by chemists. By 1869, a total of 63 elements had been discovered. As the number of known elements increased, scientists began to recognize patterns in properties and began to develop classification schemes.

Elements contain only one type of particle (the atom). All elements are shown bythe use of symbols; gold (Au), oxygen (O) and calcium (Ca) are some examplesof elements. Today, 116 elements are known; 92 of which are called natural elements. Elements can be classified as metals and nonmetals. All symbols for elements are placed on a special table called the periodic table.
