Grammar “Non-defining relative clauses”

to revise Jobs vocabulary;

to revise making up sentences with defining relative clauses;

to use non-defining relative clauses

to read short articles about people’s jobs

to speak giving extra information about people

Materials: a computer, a projector, an interactive board, cards

The procedure of the lesson

1. Organization moment

T: Good morning, boys and girls!

CL: Good morning, teacher.

T: I’m glad to see you!

CL: We are glad to see you too!

T: Sit down, please! Let’s begin our lesson! Today we are going to learn a grammar ‘non-defining relative clauses. We’ll read a text, do grammar exercises and by giving information we speak about famous people.

Warm-Up

Slide 2. Vocabulary. Pupils use the Word Cloud to find as many jobs as they can.

Slide 3. Defining clause. Pupils make up sentences with defining relative clause to describe different people at work. Then they give their own examples. Students can use Worksheet 1. The teacher checks then with pop-up answers in the slide.

Describe these jobs and place like in the example, and then give your own examples:

Lead-in: ask SS: what are the reasons why people work? Brainstorm some ideas onto the board (to earn money, to do something useful for society, because you love/are passionate about the area you work in, avoid getting bored, because you like being with your colleagues/want to meet new people ….)

In non-defining relative clauses, we use pronouns: who, whose, where and which, but we don’t use that.
